Metal Courting Candle

What is a courting candle? Popular in the 18th & 19th Centuries, the purpose of the courting candle was to signal to the suitor how long he was welcome to stay. The father or mother of the household would light the candle and adjust the height of the flame to indicate the desired length of the visit. As the candle burned down, the flame would get lower and lower, indicating to the suitor that it was time to leave.
